Gears of War The Board Game
Gears of War: The Board Game Say Goodbye to ‘Bored Games’
One major dilemma that haunted me during my teenage years—and has continually tormented me up to this day is—Why do the letters Q and Z have the highest score tiles in the game of Scrabble?
I mean, come on, I just don’t get it! In daily conversations, there is actually very little possibility of even mentioning words which contain these letters, well, unless if you tell your children that you’d take them to the zoo or if you’d tell your wife that she is the queen of your life… that may count.
Anyway, the reason for such recollection is my observation of teenagers’ increasing preference of electronic video games over board games.
Teens, nowadays, are very much updated and glued to the latest trend in technology which includes play stations, PSPs, Wiis, cell phones, iPads, and only Steve Jobs knows what else! Board games such as the good, old Scrabble and Monopoly are easily tagged as “bored games.” However, there is a new wave of board games available in the market today that is a surefire hit among your teenagers!
Thanks to the Gears Of War The Board Game. It has come to remove the boredom out of the board! Gears Of War The Board Game
is designed by Corey Konieczka, and based on the wildly popular third-person shooter by Epic Games. It is a cooperative action board game for 1-4 players assuming the roles of four Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) soldiers battling against the despicable forces of the Locust horde.
I discovered the game when on a cold evening, I invited my sons to play a board game with me and all I got in response was their grumbling; they chose instead to concentrate with their game on Xbox. The next day, I immediately headed to the nearest game store in our town to purchase any game that would interest my teenagers and divert the attention they were devoting to their gadgets. Then like a drop of rain on a sweltering drought, Gears Of War The Board Game landed on our table…
One Goal, One Team
While there are solo rules for one-player games, Gears Of War The Board Game is best played with four players, each choosing his own COG soldier with special abilities. COG soldiers are equipped with a handful of tricks represented by Order cards that allow the players to perform more actions, making the game exciting. Teamwork is essential in this game as the players complete their mission and combat the devious Locust horde. It was actually fun seeing my sons working together to emerge victorious in this game as no beginner’s luck seemed to surface.
The Enemies of Light
Gears Of War The Board Game features the vile combination of the hostile forces of the Locust horde; these atrocious creatures direct the adventure of the game. Berserkers attack players in clusters; Boomers strike the players in long-range distances with its grenade; and Tickers, blow themselves off at the feet of its enemies, but the cunning Kantus rushes towards his cohorts to revive them.
The Seven Deadly Missions
What makes Gears Of War The Board Game fascinating is its seven missions and their different objectives. Gears Of War The Board Game
boasts of the “significant replayability” of each of its mission. Unlike any other board game, it has randomized picking of cards, weapons, and maps.
Gears Of War The Board Game is really an impressive game with its challenging system. It requires sharp and clever tactics, which not only honed my sons’ critical and analytical skills, but developed their sense of solidarity as teammates as well. “Bored” has, indeed, been rubbed out from board games with Gears Of War The Board Game
